Lessons learned

01
Givers land at the top and the bottom.

Grant's research finds generous people among both the least and the most successful. Being a giver isn't the problem; giving with no plan is.

02
Be otherish, not selfless.

The givers who win care about other people and still hold big goals for themselves. They use their own interests to decide when, where, and to whom they give.

03
Do the five-minute favor.

Be willing to do anything that takes five minutes or less for anyone. It's cheap, it doesn't burn me out, and it builds a network that pays it forward.

04
Trust first, not always.

I start out generous, but when someone shows they're a taker, I switch to matching what they give. Being a giver doesn't mean being a pushover.

05
Ask for advice instead of pushing.

Asking someone for their advice gets them invested in my success. It tends to persuade better than a hard pitch.

Who should read it

Anyone in sales, management, or networking who has wondered whether being generous is holding them back. It explains when it does and when it doesn't.
