Zero to One

Peter Thiel with Blake Masters

Competition is for losers. Build something new and own it, don't copy something and fight over it.

Lessons learned

01
Zero to one versus one to n.

Copying what works takes the world from one to many. Creating something new takes it from zero to one. Only the second kind builds real value.

02
Monopoly is the goal.

Not the illegal kind, the kind where you're so much better that nobody else matters. Competition eats all the profit.

03
Start small and dominate.

Own a tiny market completely, then expand. PayPal started with eBay power sellers, not with everyone.

04
Sales matters more than nerds admit.

Thiel is blunt that distribution is half the business. A great product nobody hears about is a zero.

05
Secrets still exist.

There are valuable things most people don't know or don't believe. Finding one is the start of every real company.

Who should read it

Anyone thinking about starting a company. It's short and it will argue with most of what you assume.
